When Michael Hart's controversial book The 100 was first published in 1978, critics pointed out that Hart had the courage not only to choose who he considered were the most influential people in existence, but also to rank them in the order of importance. Needless to say, the critics were wrong, and the book has sold over 60,000 copies to date.
